Arkaden

The design concept “Traditional Harmony in Contemporary Context” was developed according to the project site, located in the heart of the old town, Esens. The proposal aims to seamlessly blend tradition and contemporary architectural elements, paying tribute to the neighboring buildings while meeting the demands of modern aesthetics.

The construction volume is strategically extruded in line with the surrounding volumes, ensuring a cohesive urban landscape. In response to the project brief for a social infrastructure and cultural center with administrative offices, a library, and an auditorium, the ground floor houses the main functions. It features high ceilings to enhance the spatial quality and create an inviting atmosphere. Furthermore, the Atrium double ceiling and skylight add grandeur and visual interest, elevating the welcoming experience.

The main façade was integrated with the Arcade, serving dual purposes of controlling sunlight penetration and establishing a transition zone between the interior and exterior. This architectural feature enhances comfort and connectivity while mitigating solar heat gain. The Arch-Shaped form of the Arcade draws inspiration from neighboring buildings to establish visual continuity and cultural resonance.

Embracing the maritime heritage and climatic considerations of the North Sea region, an asymmetrical gable roof is proposed. This distinctive roof form crafts a distinctive architectural identity that responds sensitively to its context but also ensures optimal performance in challenging weather conditions.
